Social Media Manager job description

About the role

We are looking for a Social Media Manager to run [company]'s presence on [platforms]. You will plan and publish the content, talk to the people who reply, and report on what it is doing for the business. Content is [made in-house by you / produced with a designer / supplied by an agency]. You will report to [role].

What you will do

  • Own the content calendar across [platforms] and publish to it
  • Create or commission the posts, including [copy, images, short video]
  • Respond to comments and messages within [timeframe], and escalate what needs it
  • Track performance against [the metric] and report on it monthly
  • Work with [sales, support, product] so social reflects what is actually happening
  • Keep to brand and legal guidelines, including disclosure rules where relevant

What we need

  • Experience running business social accounts, not only personal ones
  • Strong writing in the register the brand uses
  • Comfortable with [your platforms] and their scheduling and analytics tools
  • Judgement about what to reply to publicly and what to take to a DM

Nice to have

  • Short-form video production
  • Paid social experience
  • Community management in [your sector]

Before you publish the pay

Pay for this role varies with whether the person also produces the creative. A role that includes video production is a different job from one that publishes supplied assets. Say which, then publish a range on that basis.

To appear in Google job results

Fill in title, location or remote, employment type, date posted, a valid-through date and the salary range. This role is often fully remote, so set it as remote explicitly rather than leaving the location empty.

Adapt it rather than pasting it. The parts worth rewriting are the opening paragraph and the must-haves, because those are what decide whether the right person applies. Our guide to writing a job description covers why.

When it is ready, publishing it on your own site keeps the listing, the applications and the candidate data with you, and generates the structured data that makes the role eligible for Google job results.

Common questions

Should I ask for follower growth targets in the advert?

Only if that is genuinely how you will judge the role. Follower count is the easiest number to move and the least connected to revenue. If what you actually need is enquiries, support deflection or recruitment reach, say that instead, and you will attract people who think that way.

Who should make the content?

Decide before you advertise. Writing, design and video are different skills, and an advert that quietly expects all three at one salary produces either no applications or the wrong ones. If the person is doing everything, say so and price it accordingly.

Is this a junior role?

It is advertised as one far more often than the work justifies. Someone holding the public voice of the business, deciding what to say during a complaint, is not junior. If you are hiring junior, scope it to publishing and escalation and say who supervises.

Publish it on your own site.
